Completed Disappearing Nine Patch Quilt Top

Oct 14, 13 Completed Disappearing Nine Patch Quilt Top

One of my WIP is a disappearing nine patch quilt top for my youngest daughter.  Her favourite colour is purple so I chose 3 purple prints and one yellow print to match. The quilt top was meant to be all disappearing nine patch pattern but I miscalculated as it turned out smaller than I thought it would be.  Did some unpicking and added white sashing to make the overall size  bigger. I’m not sure whether this is the right way to do it but I have been basting my big quilts in halves on my dining table.  Here I have basted the top half already and about to baste the bottom half of the quilt. Now to quilt and bind it :).  My daughter loves it and realised that it matches the Star Surround dolly quilt I made for her dolly bed.   Two of the chosen fabric used in the dolly quilt is from the fabric range Veranda Screen Print by Amanda Murphy for Robert Kaufman.  The purple print is D#11500 and the yellow print is D# 11485.   I am linking this blog post with Freshly Pieced’s WIP Wednesday (16th Oct 2013).  You can find out more information...

FWS Quilt Block 77 Seasons

Finally found some time this week to paper piece Block 77 Seasons for my Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt. I must be out of practice as some of the yellow pieces were cut slightly too small.  Hopefully there is enough seam allowance there when I piece all the blocks together :). I have decided to join in Kristy’s Paper Piecing Party on her blog – Quiet Play.   For more information about her Paper Piecing Party, please visit her blog here:   Hoping to find some time to paper piece more blocks for my FWS quilt next week :)....

My first nearly finished Quilt

A family friend had a baby boy recently and I had to make a quilt for her little boy.  I decided to use the Charm Squares Baby Quilts Pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.  You can find the free pattern on her website here. Spotlight had a sale where all fat quarters were $1.  I managed to find 4 robot themed prints to use.  Unfortunately there is no mention of the fabric designer on the selvage. The pattern asked for 5 different prints so I had to use a blue solid coloured homespun fabric as a 5th print for this quilt.  I decided to use the solid colour to separate the print fabrics and used one of the print twice in each row to form an “X”. One thing good about a small quilt is that it is really easy to baste on my dining table :). I used a walking foot to quilt roughly straight lines 1 inch apart using the guide that it came with.  LOL I definitely need more practice :). Below are pics of the front and back of the quilt with first stage of binding done.  I recently unpacked some stuff (we moved 18 months ago) and discovered a packet of Bobby pins for hair.  I trailed them while sewing on binding on my first Mug Rugs and loved it.  No more poking myself with pins while adjusting and sewing on the binding :).  I am new to quilting so I am sure others would already know about this.   Now to finish hand sew the binding and hope my friend and her baby boy likes it :).   Gemma at Pretty Bobbins is having her first “I Quilt” linky party (4th Oct 2013) and I thought I would join in with this blog post :). September has been a crazy busy month for me with lots of school events on at the kids’ school.  The kids are now on 2 weeks school holidays so I was able to make the letters for the third month of Easy As ABC QAL.  You can find out more information about it on Blossom Heart Quilts here.  We are now half way through the QAL but it is still not too late to join the QAL :). Here are my letters for this month. Here are all my blocks so far for the Easy As ABC QAL. I am really liking the rainbow effect.  Now to figure out how I want to piece them together i.e. with or without sashing :)....

Pieced Hexies Craftsy Course Review

Sep 23, 13 Pieced Hexies Craftsy Course Review

Recently Craftsy celebrated 2 million members by having a sale on everything.  I knew straight away what I wanted to enrol in: Pieced Hexies Beyond English Paper Piecing with Mickey Depre.  You can find this quilting Craftsy class here:     I really enjoyed this class.  Mickey Depre is a great teacher and her classes are well structured.  I was surprised at the length of each lesson but I was not disappointed.  Besides there’s not much to learn about English Paper Piecing :).  I learnt a few tips that I did not know when I started my hexie quilt in my teens which is still a WIP that mum took over.  These tips will come in handy for my second attempt at hexies :). Mickey goes through all the basics for English Paper Piecing in one lesson which is great as I have not done hand sewing in 20+ years.  She goes through how to piece her 2 hexie designs and how to get the designs perfect. The Craftsy course may not be long time wise compared to other Craftsy courses but when it comes with 2 bonus patterns and with the sale discount I felt it was worth the cost.  I am very happy with the class and glad I took it. Here is my first project for the class.  I have not sewn them together yet as I wasn’t sure which design I want.  I chose these 3 as I was after a floral design. I could not decide so I asked hubby and my girls which they liked best.  They all chose the bottom design so I will be hand sewing it tonight.  Looking forward to trying the other design in the Craftsy course and seeing whether I can come up with some of my own :)....
