My first 2 Farmer’s Wife Sampler blocks

Jul 18, 13 My first 2 Farmer’s Wife Sampler blocks

This is my third attempt at making these blocks for the Farmer’s Wife Sampler quilt.  First attempt using Rotary cut method: I didn’t measure correctly and cut most of the blocks too small.  Second attempt using Foundation Paper piecing method: again I didn’t measure & cut the fabric correctly so they were too small.  Third time’s the charm as below are my first two Farner’s Wife Sampler blocks.  So happy with the way they turned out even though I have a little doubt about fabric choices for Block 1.  Hopefully it will go well with the rest of the FWS blocks :). I purchased my copy of the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book from the Book Depository.  I found they had the cheapest price that included postage to Australia.  If you would like to buy a copy, here is a link to the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book. These blocks were made using Carol Doaks Foundation Paper purchased at Book Depository....

My first Quilt Top – Piece of Cake 3

Jul 17, 13 My first Quilt Top – Piece of Cake 3

I love Craftsy and mainly enrolled in their knitting courses.  This year I decided to treat myself to a Quilting Craftsy course.  I bought/enrolled in Camille Roskelley’s Craftsy Pre-Cut Piecing Made Simple Class course and I have not regretted it.  The course is well structured and easy to follow. Camille makes it look easy and fun.  She also offers a lot of great tips which has been a great help to me – a newbie to quilting!  I am so excited that Camille will be teaching/doing another Craftsy course.  Hopefully it will be out in time for Christmas. The great thing about Craftsy is that you can watch the course again and again.  Very helpful with my first attempt of Camille’s Piece of Cake 3 quilt pattern.  Below is my first finished quilt top EVER!  So excited :). Sorry for the bad photo.  I have not figured out a great way to take a nice photo of a big item yet.  Will take more and better photos once I have quilted it. The quilt top was made using a layer cake of CHERRY ON TOP by Keiki, white quilting fabric and backing fabric as borders on the very top and bottom of the quilt top.  This quilt will be for my 6yo DD.  She chose the layer cake as she loves anything cupcake/baking related.  She also chose the backing fabric as it reminded her of My Little Pony (the...

First month of Easy As ABC QAL

Jul 17, 13 First month of Easy As ABC QAL

Posted by in All Posts, Easy As ABC QAL, Quilting

The first 5 letters for Easy As ABC QAL is now available on Blossom Heart Quilts.  I was so excited I read over everything twice and jumped right into cutting fabrics out.  Newbie mistake!!!  If you are going to scale a pattern/block, make sure you take into account seam allowances.  Luckily I was scaling down by 50% so realised my mistake early and did 1/8″ seam allowance instead of 1/4″ seam allowance.  Will be doing it correctly for the rest of the blocks. Despite my newbie mistake, I think my first 4 letters turned out ok :).  I forgot to buy aqua fabric so will head back to the fabric shop for the rest of the colours next week.  Hopefully I can do “E” before the end of the month. Below are my first 4 blocks for the QAL. My first 4 letters for Easy As ABC QAL I decided to make the coloured borders thicker to make the final block size 7″ x 7 3/4″.  I am thinking of giving each block another white border before joining all the blocks up...

Yummy Fabric Mail

Jul 10, 13 Yummy Fabric Mail

Posted by in All Posts, Quilting

This week I received the most yummiest fabric mail.  Love the colours.  All the fabric are designed by Bonnie and Camille for Moda.  They are my favourite designers.  I purchased all this as a “Stash Bundle”.  There are 21 x 1/2m of fabric from Bliss, Ruby and Vintage Modern. Just heard from one of the designers (Camille) that most of this are hard to find and not available any more.  I was planning to use these for my Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt but decided to save it for another quilting...

Joining Easy As ABC QAL

Jul 04, 13 Joining Easy As ABC QAL

Posted by in All Posts, Easy As ABC QAL, Quilting

Blossom Heart Quilts is going to run an “Easy As ABC QAL” on her blog starting July and ending in December. Each month you make 5 blocks over 6 months period (30 blocks total). Sounds easy! You can find out more info here. I decided to do the quilt in plain coloured homespun quilting fabric. I have also decided to shrink the pattern roughly by 50% to make a cot sized quilt.  To spread the cost, I’ve purchased these colours first (white at the top of the pic) but will be going back for the rest soon.  Love fabric shopping. Looking forward to patterns & tutorials for the first row (letters: A, B, C, D & E) at the end of this week for July. My first QAL. So excited and hope I will actually stick with it till the end. Wish me...
